We are a group of passionate social issue filmmakers and designers from different parts of Europe and the US, who have been working with the Awra Amba Community ever since 2004. We do not live in the village with them, but since our involvement with the community, we have become their representatives outside of Ethiopia. Please read about our credentials and work below.

Paulina Tervo - Producer / Director / Project Lead

Paulina is a documentary producer, director and photographer of Finnish origin, with many years of experience working in film, television, online and print medias. Her work has been screened in festivals, museums and communities all over the world, broadcast in the UK, US and Finland and published in many European and Middle Eastern newspapers / magazines. Speaking five languages she has worked in many parts of the world, including Ethiopia, Kenya, Malawi, India, Indonesia, Palestine, Israel and many parts of Europe. 

Paulina has an academic background in documentary film-making and international development and she likes to explore social and anthropological themes in her films. Interested in new ways of digital and non-linear storytelling, she is passionate about using film as a tool for social change and bringing out the voices of the voiceless. 

She also works as a teacher and consultant on film workshops and has recently worked with the International Film Festival of Malawi, as well as Addis International Documentary Festival. 

 

Serdar Ferit - Co-director / Cinematographer 

Serdar is a film director, cameraman and editor. He has excelled in visually attractive drama, documentaries, virals and music videos, winning several awards for his work and receiving personal praise from the likes of Kevin Spacey, Emma Thompson, Mike Figgis and Nik Powell.

He has worked in Africa, the Middle East, Turkey and the UK. His work has been broadcast globally to over 100 million viewers during the Pangea Day event, as well as on CNN, BBC, the Guardian among others. His films have screened in over 200 cinemas across the UK, Virgin Media VOD platforms and many others.

Serdar has an academic background in fiction film directing and documentary film-making, having completed post-graduate degrees in both disciplines. He is a certified editor and trained cameraman and has also taught at Greenwich University, Bucks New University and London Academy of Radio, Film & TV. He speaks fluent Turkish. 

 

Pati Keilwerth, Co-Producer, Germany 

After finishing law school with a specialization in Copyright Law, Competitive Law and Anti-Trust Law at the University Passau, Pati was hired to coordinate the protocol of the Berlin Film Festival. She continued working for the Berlinale in various departments and for the Broadcaster rbb, while studying Audiovisual Media Science at the Filmschool HFF “Konrad Wolf” in Potsdam-Babelsberg. Directly after her diploma with a thesis on international Co-Production she began employment with Wim Wenders.

After a three-year tenure as Wim Wenders’s Executive Assistant, she embarked on new terrain in the media industry and has been engaged in digital distribution, online and social media marketing, as well as branded entertainment ever since.

James Arthur - Creative Technologist 

James worked for six years as the Digital Media Director of Large Blue, where he helped build a small video production company into a leading digital communications agency. His clients included some of the world’s leading brands, NGOs and design companies. His role was to help them make effective use of the web.

James is a co-founder of FabHub and Togethr and co-founder and board member of green.tv. He's an Espian and trustee of London Creative Labs and has represented the UK creative industries in China on behalf of the IVCA and UKTI.

 

Julie Kim - Graphic Designer 

Julie Kim is a graphic designer running her own London based design studio.  

The studio  embraces a range of projects ranging from print, branding, web design to environmental graphics. Her work is inspired by a dialogue between material and digital craft, and guided by a conceptual rigour. At the same time, her graphic approach is always characterised by a playfulness. She enjoys sculpting with the language of form, instigating conversations and sparking fresh typographic adventures.

Her clients have included Shakespeare's Globe, Design Museum, Serpentine Gallery, ArtAngel and Phaidon Press for whom she has designed the forthcoming book Vitamin Green. 

 

Joel Baker - Web Design Assistant

Joel Baker is a talented graphic designer and web designer, currently studying graphic design at Chelsea School of Art and Design. He has produced films for Sony, worked in the Timeout London magazine studio, designed record sleeves and built a number of websites (including the site for record label Night Slugs). Joel also runs a successful club night in Shoreditch and DJs up and down the country. Joel has co-authored ‘Liminality’ an art book exploring the transition between old and new as a permanent space.

 

Ida Sjoman - Project Assistant

Ida is a part-time intern who supports and updates our social media sites and websites. She is studying for her bachelor’s degree in Media and Cultural studies at Kingston University. Previously, she studied media and communication for two years at the Open University in Finland. Ida wants to deepen her knowledge of filmmaking, motion graphics and animation. As a Cultural Studies student Ida is intrigued by the opportunities in the contemporary media such as interactivity, multimedia and globalisation.
